Off the beaten path
This is not Europe as you know it. The Balkan Adventure leads you to the side of Europe you’ve never seen before – the wild side. The whole region bursts of natural and cultural wealth, yet it remains enigmatic to many, and practically untouched by mass tourism. From Bosnia & Herzegovina to Montenegro, capture the essence of the Balkans with this short break. Hike through the oldest forest, swim in the clearest lake, and explore the deepest canyon while meeting the different people, traditions, and cuisines of the region.
The Balkan Adventure takes us to the historic and impressive Perucica primaeval forest. Located in Sutjeska National Park, it has been protected since the 1950s, but the remote location has preserved the trees for more than 300 years. NP Sutjeska is home to more natural wonders – including the Skakavac waterfall and Trnovacko lake. Skakavac waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Europe, and Trnovacko Lake has drawn interest because of its natural heart-like shape and clean, turquoise water. After exploring forests and mountains, it’s time to get on the water and enjoy rafting on the Tara River. Tara River Canyon is protected by UNESCO due to its hydrological, geological, and biological potential.
ITINERARY
DAY 1 – Arrival at the destination and a hike in Perucica primeval forest
Your guide will meet you in Komolac, near Dubrovnik by 10 AM, and from there transfer you to Sutjeska National Park – the oldest and biggest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Once we arrive, we visit one of Sutjeska’s main attractions, the Peručica primeval forest, for a scenic hike. At about 20 thousand years old, Peručica is among the last of the primeval forests in Europe and one of the richest ecosystems in Europe. Among the forest’s many springs and streams is a special attraction – the Skakavac waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls in the country. After the hike, we get transferred to our accommodation in a charming bungalow village built in the traditional style of the area. Get rested and meet your guide and the rest of the group for a traditional dinner.
Accommodation: Bungalow; Transfer: 3 hours; Hiking: 3 hours
DAY 2 – Trnovačko glacial lake hike and swim
Today we have an excursion to the Trnovačko Lake, a surreal looking area at the foot of the tallest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Accessible only on foot or on horseback, this glacial lake is nestled amid a ring of mountain peaks which reflect off its emerald surface making it the most beautiful lake of the whole region. We will have some time to rest, have a picnic and swim in the lake, before heading back to our departure point. While getting to the trekking starting point, we will experience a jeep safari, overlooking Perucica forest and Skakavac waterfall. On our way to the start of the trekking path we experience a Jeep safari through National park Sutjeska where, from a particular viewpoint, we see the wondrous rainforest Perucica and its waterfall Skakavac.

DAY 3 – Tara river rafting
Today we experience the deepest river canyon in Europe and one of the best rivers for white rafting in this part of Europe – the Tara river. The canyon is a UNESCO-protected site and its crystal-clear river surrounded by forests, cliffs and waterfalls make this tour exceptionally scenic. The 17 km section of this tour is the most exciting part of the Tara river with the most rapids which are easy and fun. Along the way, we stop for photos and swimming. We finish our trip near the camp where a traditional lunch will be served for us upon our arrival.
