Zrmanja River Trip

Spectacular canyon with magnificent waterfalls

The weekend-long Zrmanja River trip is a perfect program for a short outdoor getaway. It is designed for energetic and adventurous people who want to indulge in breathtaking beauty merged with outdoor activities. Spend your weekend feeling like a scout again with our daily program of camping, kayaking, swimming, and exploring rivers. Sleep under the stars and wake up to the sound of the river and birds in the morning. With perfectly clear warm water and magnificent waterfalls, Zrmanja and Krupa are among the most beautiful rivers in Europe. They are easy and safe enough for beginner canoeists.

Weekend Zrmanja River kayaking trip

The trip begins in Kastel Zegarski, only an hour’s drive from Zadar. After the first hour of paddling down easy rapids, you will – if time and weather permit – visit beautiful Krupa waterfalls and swim under them. Following a night’s rest, you will continue your trip from a small town called Obrovac. Spectacular sights of the cliffs in contrast to the turquoise river color will lead you all the way to the river estuary. You finish up in the Novigrad Sea, so this is a great opportunity to combine river and sea kayaking in one trip!

Short itinerary:

Day 1: The trip starts in Kastel Zegarski
Day 2: Kayaking Zrmanja river
Day 3: Kayaking to the Adriatic Sea

Highlights of Zrmanja River Trip:

Zrmanja river and canyon, Krupa waterfalls

Day 1

Arrival to destination, Kastel Zegarski

Your host will meet you at the Zadar bus station at 17:30 or at the airport in Zadar at 18:00, and drive you to the small village of Kastel Zegarski. After you get settled in, get ready for a welcome BBQ dinner with your guide and the rest of the group for an introduction to the week's itinerary.
Accommodation: camp; Meals: D, Transfer: 45 min
Day 2

Starting our river trip

After breakfast and a safety brief, you get the chance to practice your paddling techniques on a flat and scenic section of the river. Enjoy the clear waters and a bounty of local flora and fauna. About mid-way down the river – if time and weather permit – we take a detour into the Krupa river and stop in a beautiful secret location. Here, we eat our picnic-lunches and take a swimming break under the waterfall. We continue down the exciting second part of the river where we go through multiple rapids and an occasional waterfall.
Accommodation: camp; Meals: B, D; Kayaking: 12 km; 4-5 hours, moderate
Day 3

Continuing our expedition downstream

After breakfast and a short drive to Obrovac, we continue our kayaking expedition down Zrmanja River all the way to the Adriatic Sea. The scenery on this section of the river changes as if you had gone to another planet! The journey meanders through a spectacular deep canyon. The surrounding nature is no longer lush and green, but barren and desert-like – think “Wild West” movies. After this challenging but beautiful day on the river, we finish up in Novigrad where we change into dry clothes and say our goodbyes before departing. If you are flying home, we will arrange your transfer to the airport. However, if you are staying, our guides will be happy to give you recommendations. Ask them about other places you want to visit and the things you want to do. They will give you great tips that aren’t listed in your guidebook.
Meals: B; Kayaking: 17 km; 4-5hours, moderate
