Croatia active trip, a journey through time

This great Croatia active trip, is based in a small picturesque town of Skradin. It is a unique town on the very edge of the Krka River National Park. The town is famous for its turbulent, 6000 years old past. It is one of the oldest Croatian towns. Which has begun writing its history since the time of the Illyrians. It received its name during the Roman rule, Scardona. After the Roman Scardona had been ruined and robbed to the very foundations. Therefore the Croats rebuilt the town. And named it Skradin. Today it is an attractive tourist destination with an authentic stone town core. It’s location is in Central Dalmatia. Within a region known for its long beaches and pine woods.

Arrival to destination – Skradin town

Upon your arrival to Croatia, we will transfer you to Skradin and accommodate you in the Skradinski Buk hotel. Skradin is a small picturesque town named after the world famous waterfall on the river Krka. It is the oldest Croatian settlement with the status of a town. It was once the capital of the Roman Liburnia and the most important war harbour of Croatia and Bosnia in the 14th century. Apart from a great history, Skradin and its surroundings are places of unique natural beauties. The breath-taking view over the town from the bridge on the highway towards Split was nominated for the prestigious Golden Flower of Europe award for the best sightseeing point on European highways. We will meet in the hotel lobby for a get-together dinner and presentation of the program. You are free to enjoy an evening walk around the town and its pubs. Find out which is your favourite Croatian wine, beer or ice-cream.

Day 2

Sea kayaking Zlarin Island, optional visit to Šibenik

The sea kayaking day starts from Zablaće, a little village close to Šibenik. After a short introduction to paddling, we start our expedition to the island of Zlarin, which is only 2 kilometres from the mainland. After paddling along the coast of the island, we come to the town of Zlarin, a perfect place for a picnic break and some swimming. We slowly finish up our day with paddling along the island and the beautiful Šibenik coastline. We have the view of its remarkable fortress on the very entrance to the town. After a beautiful day of sea kayaking on the Adriatic Sea and before our return to Skradin, we can make an optional detour to visit Šibenik town for an inspirational sightseeing. An ancient town with lively Mediterranean spirit and its breath-taking cathedral make it an unavoidable destination.

Day 3

Cycling day in NP Krka River and visiting Visovac Island

Today we will take our bikes from Skradin to the 44-meters high Skradinski Buk waterfall and visit one of Croatia’s most popular national parks, the Krka River National Park. The fantastic karst formations and travertine waterfalls make it a beautiful swimming area. This is the famous place where the second hydroelectric power plant in the world was built, just three days after the first hydroelectric power plant on Niagara Falls. After walking, sightseeing and taking breath-taking pictures, we will make a swimming and picnic break under the great Skradinski Buk waterfall. After this relaxing first part, we continue our cycling day by exploring the countryside surrounding the Krka River National Park. There is hardly a better way to get around the area of the park than cycling. This biking route will lead you through Croatian history all the while enjoying the landscape of forests and hills. We will bike to the shores of Visovac Lake where the boat will take us to Visovac Island and a Franciscan monastery. After sightseeing the monastery and the museum, the boat will bring us back to the shore where we’ll have a beach break for our picnic lunch. On our way back to Skradin we have a magnificent ride downhill with a scenic view over the Prokljan Lake.

Meals: B and D (lunch on your own); cycling: 4-5 h, moderate - van support if needed

Day 4

Kayaking on Zrmanja and Krupa Rivers

Early in the morning we drive towards a little village called Kaštel Žegarski and start our expedition down the magnificent wild-west-like canyons of the Zrmanja and Krupa Rivers. The watercraft may be raft, canoe or sit-on-top kayak depending upon the river conditions. We push off for an afternoon of refreshing fun on the clear, warm and green waters of these Croatian rivers, considered two of the most beautiful in Europe. Waterfalls and easy rapids, hidden swimming pools, steep sided canyons… It doesn't get better than this!

Day 5

Optional trip day

On your optional day you can be as active or as lazy as you wish. Several organized and guided tours of hiking, canyoning, climbing, sightseeing or beach trips will be proposed in case you are keen on discovering more beauties that Croatia has to offer.

(Please note that the optional trip will incur an additional charge of approx. 50€ per head, payable on site, and is dependent on suitable weather conditions. The price is based on a min. of 4 participants.)

Meals: B and D (lunch on your own)

Day 6

Trekking in the NP Paklenica and sightseeing Zadar town

If there ever was a morning worth getting up early, this is that morning. Our small expedition leads us into Paklenica National Park, the most famous trekking and rock climbing national park in Croatia. It covers the area of torrent flows of Velika and Mala Paklenica and their distinctive canyons carved vertically into the southern slopes of Velebit, and the broader surrounding area. This relatively small area has an abundance of exceptional diversity of geomorphologic phenomena and forms, diverse flora and fauna, attractive landscapes and intact nature. Having adapted to the geographic and climatic environment, the residents mostly engaged in nomad stock herding, which is confirmed by mountain shepherd residences. The fact that many people stayed in mountain residences in summertime is reflected in the ruins of numerous sacral buildings: churches, chapels, altars, holy hills and measures. The name Paklenica probably derives from black pine sap called “paklina”, which the locals used in traditional medicine, for wound treatment, for light and for coating of wooden boats. Hiking is the only way to really get to know Paklenica. Finishing our fabulous day in the NP Paklenica, we continue our journey to visit Zadar, a beautiful old town on the Adriatic coast. In the past several years, Zadar town has become an outdoor exhibition, attracting people from all demographic structures. It is really worth seeing and experiencing.

Meals: B and D (lunch on your own); Van drive: 1:15 min; hiking: 3-4 h; Sightseeing Zadar: 2 h

Day 7

Rafting Cetina River and visit Split or Trogir town

We drive south towards a little village near Omiš where our adventure on the Cetina River begins. Clear green water, jungle-like forests, caves and waterfalls will thrill you and make this rafting trip an unforgettable experience. Cetina is easy enough for families and absolute beginners. The trip ends at Radman Mills, a national restaurant in a beautiful setting of old mills once powered by the waters of the Cetina River. After an optional lunch we continue to Split or Trogir (depending on group decision). In Split you are free to walk its popular palm tree promenade and visit the Roman emperor Diocletian’s palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 4th century, or Trogir, another UNESCO site, an old town with fairy-tale streets and stone houses of incredible architecture, filled with works of art and warm ambience.

Meals: B and D (lunch on your own); Van drive: 1h30; rafting: class II-III, 3 h;

Day 8

Raftrek multi activity week holiday - rivers by the sea
A wonderful week with our guide Tino looking after everything for us - an exciting activity holiday with just the right amount of challenge for everyone, but without the stress, I didn't think it was possible. River kayaking in the Zrmanja river was the highlight but every day was excellent. We swam in so many waterfalls! Visiting historic towns after activities was a bonus - and the ice creams are amazing! Also all our questions and concerns (since I'd only ever booked package holidays with the big companies before) before booking/arrival were addressed really well and clearly by Marijka and all turned out just as she said. Skradin was a lovely place to stay; Hotel food was delicious though perhaps not enough choice/variety for some.
Thanks very much Raftrek! We are missing Croatia and Tino already...

    Fantastic tour
I did the 8 day tour Rivers by the Sea in September 2013. Away on a 5 and half week holiday, this tour was the highlight of my trip. We had a small group of 5 plus our guide as it was the end of the season, and that worked out well. Our guide Branimir was fantastic. He genuinely wanted to share his country with us, and I am sure without him we would have not seen so much. He always had time to talk about Croatia, or chat about where we all came from. The river kayaking and rafting were awesome! Branimir and the other guides on the river were very skilled and knowledgeable. I felt very safe in their capable hands. It was very beautiful kayaking down the river. You didnt have to be an expert in kayaking with such experienced guides. The tour was a good mix. Activity half the day and some sight seeing the rest of the day. I felt I got my moneys worth for sure. Sometimes we would leave at 8.30 am and get back to the hotel about 6.30 or 7 pm. We did have a day free which ended up quite good as I had a chance to look around the lovely little town of Skradin where we were based. I highly recommend Rafttrek, it was a great tour.

Everything about this trip was wonderful
We have just come back from the most amazing holiday in Croatia. All of us, including our 12 and 13 year old children, fell in love with the country and its lovely people (universally friendly and with a great sense of humour!). The first week we stayed in a small, unspoilt fishing village, Novagrad, which was a perfect chill-out place on the coast (well, estuary but it was so big, it could have been the sea) and the second we spent in Skradin (slightly bigger and more geared to tourists but still beautiful with its marble slabs and quaint shops and not a MacD's in sight) where we joined a group for the Rivers by the Sea activity holiday. I chose Raftek over other companies offering similar holidays because of my contact with Branka for whom nothing was too much trouble. She even had to rearrange our holiday for us after I broke my knee and it was all re-booked within a day.

The Rivers by the Sea trip is a wonderful mix of fun and adventure with enough to challenge even the most sporty people. We loved the effort of the kayaking, for example, mixed with shoring up for lunch in an idyllic place, such as a 'private' pool with a waterfall and 'exhilarating' jumping off rocks into the water opportunities. Everything - cycling, walking in the Krka national park, canyoning (my children's favourite trip), kayaking, sight seeing (love the 'Roman' towns) and generally having a laugh with the others in the party (a great mix of English, Swiss and Polish) was great fun and brilliantly organised.

Our guides, Borna and Tin, are lovely characters and very skilled at their job. They provided a perfect mix of fun and professionalism, knowledge and organisation. Everything was perfectly timed and there was just enough information to make the activities punctual and safe without making arrangements more complicated than they needed to be. Nothing was too much trouble for them - or Ed, beavering away behind the scenes. The staff at both hotels were great, too. The attitude to Health and Safety was a breath of fresh air. Activities were safe with an acceptable level of risk. We all knew this so we looked out for each other and the guides kept everything in control without prohibiting activites we all knew we could do. Britain! Are you listening??

Would I recommend this holiday? Would I! I only hope we can go again.

Had a great time on this tour
I did a 7 day tour with Raftrek and found it to be an excellent company and a well organized tour. From the beginning booking with the company was really easy thanks to Branka's great service. The tour guide were funny and well organized. The activities were a great mix of active and relaxing. Food was great and the chef was fantastic, so accommodating to my allergies. Great company and great tour overall.

Raftrek - Rivers by the Sea - Multi Activity Week
We took our two teenage sons on a week’s activity holiday with Raftrek. We were based in a 3-star hotel in Skradin – a lovely little town with the added attraction of huge celebrity yachts and boat trips to the national park. The hotel was very comfortable and gave a friendly service. The Raftrek guides were brilliant – all were a fantastic mix of professionalism, fun, patience, knowledge and competence – exactly what you need when trying activities out of your comfort zone. From the initial booking right through to the end of the holiday, Raftrek were very efficient and well organised.
The week consisted of cycling, rafting, sea kayaking, river kayaking and a walk to the Skradinski Buk waterfall. All the equipment used was new and in very good condition.
Raftrek included some visits to local towns in the itinerary which was a great contrast to the activities. Also included are transfers to/from Zadar or Split airports.
We had a fantastic week with a great group of families and would recommend Raftrek unreservedly. We would happily take another holiday with them in the future.
