Omiš

A Pirate city at the mouth of the river

Omiš is a small Central Dalmatian town with a harbor located between Split and Makarska. Scattered around the mouth of the Cetina River while surrounded by massive gorges, the evidence of proud and turbulent history can be found on every corner of the town. Omiš is said to be a pirate city, and two fortresses are a witness of the times past – Mirabella (Peovica) which watches above the town, and Starigrad (Fortica) which is watching over the Brac channel and surrounding islands. Omiš pirates used a special kind of boat that allowed them to take shelter in the Cetina canyon.
